Description
Infrastructure plays a crucial role in road safety. Well-designed roads can help people use roads safely and minimize the risk that a crash will occur. When a crash does happen, protective road infrastructure can mean the difference between life and death. Infrastructure that stresses traffic calming and that caters to vulnerable road users (motorcycle riders, pedestrians, children, peoples with disabilities) is particularly important.
In this Pillar, the Plan, the focus will be on engineering solutions which reduce speed through βtraffic calmingβ measures and speed management, particularly in zones with a high volume of vulnerable road users such as school and residential zones, and in build-up areas. Black spot improvement programmes will be conducted along the national road network, as well as road safety audits. Engineers will be trained in road safety audits and priority will be placed on incorporating audits into road design and infrastructure projects.
