Overview

The β€œOne-day RS10 Risk Factor Workshop” focused on the 2 main risk factors: drink driving and helmet wearing, which were chosen by the Cambodian working group during the meeting at WHO office in Phnom Penh in early 2010. The workshop targeted around 150 institutions (non governmental organizations and private companies in Cambodia).

It presented latest research and actions related to the 2 main risk factors. It also introduced an updated internal road safety policy and lobbied those institutions to adopt the policy for their employee safety.

The workshop was organized three times for a total of 163 participants, who were senior decision-makers and representatives from the international and local organizations, U.N agencies, private companies, and reporters. It was presided by high range officials from NRSC[1] (H.E. Ung Chun Hour, General Secretary of GSNRSC[2] on the September 17th, 2010, H.E. Toch Chan Kosal, Deputy chairman of the NRSC on the September 21st, and by H.E. Hean Bun Theav, Under Secretary of State of Ministry of Public Works and Transport on the September 23rd).

Various speakers from GSNRSC, police and RS 10 consortium partners were invited to provide presentations and engaged in active question-answer sections.

Objectives of the workshops

  1. To Review helmet safety issues including latest research and new Cambodia helmet standards and risk of not wearing helmet (based on the good practice manual and RCVIS[3] data and research).
  2. To introduce the risks and consequences of drink driving (based on the good practice manual, available data and research) and present solutions including public education and enforcement strategies.
  3. To introduce an updated internal road safety policy on 10-point commitment, prioritizing the helmet wearing and drink driving.

Quotations

Quote from Mr. Tong Dara, executive assistant to country director of Care International in Cambodia β€œThe workshop is quite important to my organization, especially the introduction of the 10-point commitment in the road safety internal policy. I will introduce the policy and those practical experiences from road safety network members to the management team to enforce to employees. I have learnt a lot in only one day, all information in presentations are necessary to take into account. The workshop drives me to deeply understand on the risk factor on helmet wearing and drink-driving”.
