Overview
Following the 2-day national workshop on Helmet Wearing and Drink Driving, 2 field level workshops were organized on 26-27 and 29-30 July 2010. Both workshops were presided over by Mr. Chan Dara, Deputy General Directorate of Transports of the Ministry of Public Work and Transports, and Deputy General Secretariat of the National Road Safety Committee, with the total of around 130 participants from 3 provinces: (Kandal, Kampong Speu, and Phnom Penh).
The first field level workshop was organized to target provincial representatives (Provincial Road Safety Committee, military police, provincial department of transport, and provincial police commissariat). 36 people attended.
The second workshop involved lower levels as commune representatives. Ninety participants attended, compared to only 70 planned invitations (33 participants requested spontaneously to attend as well, which showed their high interest in the topics and their strong willingness to apply it to their commune activities).
Speakers from different provincial departments and communes were invited to share their experiences, challenges and solutions during the workshops.
Objectives of the workshops
- To Review helmet safety issues including latest research and new Cambodia helmet standards and risk of not wearing helmet (based on Good Practice Manual and RCVIS data and research).
- To introduce the risks and consequences of drink-driving (based on Good Practice Manual and on data and research) and present solutions including public education and enforcement strategies.
- To develop provincial and commune drink-driving action plans to be inserted into their road safety action plans
- To create opportunities for networking and partnership/collaboration for future road safety work.
Quote
Mr. Sin Sovanthy, representative from the Kampong Speu Provincial Traffic Police Officer.
I learned a lot about the helmet wearing, drink driving and their consequences. I will use my knowledge gained from the workshop to aware people in my community to protect their lives by wearing a helmet and do not drink and drive. Additionally, I like the presentations on drink driving and its consequences the most. I would suggest for more workshops on exchanging the enforcement technique, if possible.
